Human impacts on ecosystems
Humans Impact on the ecosystem in a variety of ways:
1. Farming practices- land allocation, fertiliser, chemicals (pesticides), top soil damage, soil nutrient depletion --> look into salinity + eutrophication 2. Habitat destruction- Deforestation and hunting. Building roads. Mining and resource collection (salinity and natural disasters (mudslides)) --> look into salinity and erosion (good example might be palm oil- gorillas) 3. Industry- pollution and production. Effect on ozone layer, environmental pollution, effect on animals (think about carbon cycle, look into fish of the great lakes) 4. Foreign invaders: introduced species (deliberate and accidental)- effect on ecosystem --> look at how we have tried to combat this in Australia 5. War & Chemical weapons and spills (oil spills, atomic bombs, nuclear reactor meltdowns) --> look at how this has affected animals (try ecosystem post-oil spill) 6. Human Waste (pacific rubbish, sewerage, rubbish tips, use of natural resources) --> look into long term effects (sustainability- how do we produce all this stuff--> amazon rainforest) and management strategies 7. Buildings, Cities and infrastructure (including dams, sea walls, electricity and power, damaging topsoil) --> look into effect of cities on where animals and habitat has changed, overharvesting and sustainability |

Group work (pairs):
Pick an element above and draw a flow chart, diagram, use images or write a short summary (or make or find a video) that describes how this human interaction with the environment affects the ecosystem. look at long term flow on effects (such as rubbish is a waste of natural resources, non bio-degradable and harmful to other animals)
Examples of flow charts can be found in your textbook in chapter 16
You have the remainder of this class and Friday to organise these presentations- they only need to be about 5 minutes
You will present this to the class on Monday (So work hard and fast) - have a soft copy ready as a file or a link ect; so that I can post them onto this page for your classmates learning.
